Due Diligence in Seed Fund Investing Course

Led by Bob Creeden, Managing Director of the UVA LVG Seed Fund & New Ventures, Due Diligence in Seed Fund Investing is a course available to second-year business students interested in venture capital. Using real examples from the Fund’s pipeline, Creeden teaches an industry proven due diligence process to assess the viability of investments under consideration.

Patent and Licensing Clinic & Advanced Patent and Licensing Clinic

UVA LVG leads two patent and licensing clinics through the UVA School of Law that offer students hands-on experience with learning how and when to file patents and draft licensing agreements. Students in the clinic work at LVG once a week and learn directly from our in-house intellectual property attorneys.

Technology Transfer Workshops

UVA LVG hosts a two-part technology commercialization workshop during the fall semester for graduate students, research residents, and post-doctoral fellows to gain a better understanding of how technology transitions from research projects to commercial products.

During this two-part workshop, students gain insight into a career that requires broad scientific expertise, business insight, and legal acumen to convert basic research into practical applications. LVG will explain all elements of intellectual property management and students will learn the necessary steps involved in effectively protecting and commercializing the results of scientific research. 

Attending the workshop serves as a prerequisite for semester-long licensing internship opportunities during the following spring.

Entrepreneurial Law Clinic

As preparation for advising startup companies, students participate in a series of class sessions over the first half of the semester covering the topics most frequently encountered by startup businesses, including, pre-venture counseling, entity choice, formation documents, shareholder agreements, IP protection, etc. Then, students will receive firsthand experience in working with real startup companies under the supervision of the course instructor and supervisor.

The innovations that produce economic growth and social progress first arise as ideas. The cost of bringing a new idea to market can be extraordinarily high, but the cost of copying that innovation is often very cheap. Intellectual property law tries to balance the incentive to create with society’s interest in spreading the benefits of innovation. The ability of digital technologies to copy and exploit the advantages of unique intellectual achievements presents new challenges for intellectual property law, making it one of the fastest-growing legal specialties in the United States.
