Mobius Scientific, a targeted biological cholesterol accumulation treatment company, won the inaugural BioSpark pitch event that was held at the University of Virginia Licensing & Ventures Group's headquarters in downtown Charlottesville on Thursday afternoon. The event was held in conjunction with CvilleBioHub.

In front of a packed house, Mobius Scientific founder Dr. Nehal Mehta impressed an esteemed panel of judges, who evaluated pitches based on five criteria: 1) Problem 2) Solution 3) Innovation 4) Team and 5) Presentation.

Mobius Scientific's first product will treat macular degeneration, the most common form of age-related blindness.

Vasarya Therapeutics, a company founded by UVA professor Tom Barker that is developing targeted treatments for fibrotic disorders, took second; and Liquet, a medical equipment manufacturing company based in Charlottesville that is reimagining drug delivery in vascular medicine, took third.
